Leuprorelin is a gonadotropin - releasing hormone (GnRH) analog with a high affinity for GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland. By binding to GnRH receptors, initially, it stimulates the pituitary gland to release gonadotropins, such as follicle - stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), resulting in a transient increase in sex hormone levels in the body, which is the so - called "flare - up effect". However, after continuous use, it leads to a decrease in the sensitivity of the pituitary gland to GnRH, reducing the secretion of FSH and LH, thereby suppressing the functions of the ovaries and testes and decreasing the levels of estrogen and androgen in the body.
Main Efficacy
- Treatment of endometriosis: By inhibiting ovarian function and reducing estrogen secretion, it causes the ectopic endometrial tissue to atrophy, thus alleviating symptoms such as pain.
- Treatment of uterine fibroids: Lowering estrogen levels can shrink fibroids and improve symptoms such as menorrhagia, abdominal pain, and frequent urination caused by fibroids.
- Treatment of prostate cancer: It is used for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. By inhibiting the testes from secreting testosterone, it reduces the level of androgen in the body and inhibits the growth and proliferation of prostate cancer cells.
- Treatment of precocious puberty: For children with central precocious puberty, it can inhibit the pituitary gland from secreting gonadotropins, delay the process of sexual development, prevent premature closure of the epiphyseal plate, and is beneficial for improving the final height of the affected children.
